Pulling Bindweed

Effectively controlling bindweed requires removing the top growth and as much of the root system as possible. You can pull the bindweed, but it's crucial to dig deep to get all the roots, including rhizomes. Even small fragments of root can regenerate. Cutting bindweed at the soil line will disrupt the plant's ability to photosynthesize, but it will grow back (see Box No. 37.) What Bill demonstrates in his no-till patch on the East end of the garden is that bindweed can be effectively controlled by changing soil pH and composition to create an environment that is hostile to the plant.

Please help the garden this month by pulling bindweed from Box No. 37, from the pumpkin patch, from beneath the shade canopy, and from wherever you see it.

Don't compost it, put it into garbage cans or the dumpster.
